Who this applies to

This code applies to every attendee at UnlockedHacks. It covers the venue, the event Discord server and other event channels, and all projects, demos, and presentations.

UnlockedHacks is fiscally sponsored by The Hack Foundation through HCB. This code does not replace or change the Event Liability Release or Emergency Medical Authorization signed at registration.

Expected behavior

• Be welcoming. Many attendees are at their first hackathon. Help beginners and include people.
• Be a good teammate. Share the work and the credit, and handle disagreements calmly.
• Respect “no.” If someone says no, stop, or asks for space, accept it the first time.
• Keep it school-appropriate: conversations, project content, slides, team names, and clothing.
• Follow instructions from staff and venue staff, especially about safety.

Not allowed

Harassment or discrimination of any kind, including targeting someone because of their race or ethnicity, religion, gender or gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, appearance, age, school, or experience level. Also not allowed:

• Insults, slurs, threats, intimidation, or bullying
• Unwanted physical contact, or sexual comments, advances, or content
• Following someone, or repeatedly contacting someone who doesn’t want contact
• Sharing someone’s personal information without permission
• Sexual, violent, hateful, or graphic content, including in projects and on shared screens
• Repeatedly disrupting talks, judging, or other teams
• Taking, damaging, or tampering with anyone else’s belongings, hardware, or project
• Cheating, plagiarism, or lying to organizers or judges
• Retaliating against someone who reports a concern

If someone asks you to stop, stop immediately. What counts is how your behavior affects others, not whether you meant it as a joke.

Venue and safety rules

Coming and going

• Always check in at the front desk before entering the event area. Check-in opens at 8:30 AM.
• While you’re at the event, stay in the event area on Floor 6. Other parts of the building are off-limits.
• You may leave the building at any time. For example, you can get your own lunch, even though meals are provided. Once you leave the event area, you are not under UnlockedHacks supervision, and Oregon Unlocked is not responsible for you while you’re away.
• Getting to and from the event is arranged by each attendee and their family. Oregon Unlocked is not responsible for travel to or from the venue.

Your belongings

You’re responsible for your laptop, hardware, and personal items. Oregon Unlocked is not responsible for anything that is lost, stolen, or damaged.

Substances and weapons

Not allowed at the event: alcohol, tobacco, vapes, cannabis, illegal drugs, misuse of prescription medication, and weapons of any kind. Anyone who appears to be under the influence will be removed.

Hardware safety

You’re responsible for using the hardware and tools you bring safely.

• Soldering: be mindful of the people around you. Keep the iron in its stand, never leave it on and unattended, and wear eye protection.
• Wall power: don’t open up or rewire anything that plugs into a wall outlet. Power your project with batteries, USB, or a plug-in adapter.
• Lithium batteries: don’t puncture, crush, short, or leave them charging unattended. Tell a staff member right away if a battery swells, gets hot, or smells.
• Not allowed without organizer approval: open flames or heat guns, lasers aimed near people, flying drones indoors, projectiles, and chemicals beyond basic adhesives.
• Clean up your area, including wire and solder scraps.

Digital safety

Don’t hack or scan networks, devices, or accounts you don’t own. This includes the venue Wi-Fi and other attendees’ laptops. No malware. Don’t collect people’s personal data without their consent.

Health

• Tell a staff member if you’re hurt or feel sick. In an emergency, call 911.
• Bring and carry your own medications, such as inhalers, EpiPens, and prescriptions. Don’t share them.
• Food allergies: email directors@oregonunlocked.org before the event. You’re responsible for checking what you eat.

The venue

Instrument is a working office that is hosting us. Stay away from employee desks, offices, and equipment. Don’t take or move anything that isn’t set out for the event, and throw away your trash. Anyone who damages the venue or other people’s property may be removed from the event and may be responsible for the cost.

Photos and video

Photos and video will be taken throughout the event and may be used to promote UnlockedHacks and Oregon Unlocked. The Event Liability Release signed at registration covers this.

When you take photos yourself, ask before photographing or filming other attendees. Never take photos or video in restrooms.

Get help or report a concern

If anyone is in immediate danger, call 911 first.

For help with anything during the event, or to report a concern:

• In person: tell anyone wearing a STAFF badge on their lanyard.
• Discord: message @Slooquie, or post in the event Discord server.
• Instagram: message @oregon.unlocked.
• Email, any time: directors@oregonunlocked.org

When you can, include what happened, when, where, and who was involved.

Enforcement

Organizers may take any action they consider appropriate, at their sole discretion. This includes a warning, loss of prize eligibility, disqualification, removal from the event, a ban from future Oregon Unlocked events, or contacting a parent or guardian or law enforcement. Organizers’ decisions are final.

Violence, threats, sexual misconduct, weapons, and substances may result in immediate removal.
